We celebrated by taking part in the 'Chatodrome' that Colm's fellow villagers had organized.
It was bitterly cold at Donibane's main square, but it managed to stay dry, so we made the most of it by sitting around the table (for over two hours!) to welcome anybody who wanted to hear about our project, Beste hitzak–Other Words. We also talked about the Irish language and culture, and mentioned small and minority languages in Europe and around the world. But, above all, we enjoyed hearing about our guest writer, Colm Ó Ceallacháin.
The people of Pasai Donibane have proved to be incredibly keen on issues related to language, culture and community building in general. And so has Colm, our Basque speaking Irishman in the making. He was one of the people who read out the declaration on the use of Basque that the village council had prepared for the occasion.
All credit goes to you, dear Colm, for making such an effort to use our language during your eight weeks in the Basque Country. We really appreciate it.
