The Frisian writer Hein Jaap Hilarides (1969) has been selected by the jury of Other Words to stay in the Slovenian city of Maribor for a writer’s residence of eight weeks in the period September-November 2017. Four Frisian writers submitted a plan for the residence in Maribor.
Hein Jaap Hilarides is a writer and musician. He writes prose and poetry in Frisian, Bildts, and Dutch. Recently he published the novel The Trekker fan Troje (The Tractor of Troy). In 2014 he published Stimd Slik, a book of poetry in the Bildt language together with Bildt landscapes of the painter Hendrik Elings. While in Maribor, Hilarides plans to work on a new novel. One of his characters is the grandma of Friso Wassenaar, the main character of the novel. She immigrated in the thirties of the last century from the region of Maribor (then: Marburg) to Frisia to marry Friso’s grandpa. How did she experience her youth in Maribor, being part there of a German speaking community? What was it like to be a German native speaker in Frisia just before and during Second World War? In order to characterize this grandma in a realistic way, Hein Jaap Hilarides intends to explore Maribor and its history of the first half of the twentieth century.
