The Irish selection committee of the Focail Eile (Other Words) programme selected Orna Ní Choileáin as its first writer for the Other Words project. Orna will be In Friesland between April and June 2016. She will take up residence in Ljouwert/Leeuwarden, the Frisian capital and European Cultural Capital in 2018.
Orna Ní Choileáin stems from West Cork. She has won prizes for her creative prose, poetry, drama and theatre, and short-story writing at the Oireachtas and at other Gaelic festivals. She is the recipient of the Arts Council Bursary Award for Literature. Her collection of short stories for adults ‘Sciorrann an tAm’ (Time Flies) was shortlisted for Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin Irish Language Book of the Year 2014 while her earlier collection ‘Canary Wharf’ is on both the Leaving Certificate and the European Baccalaureate Syllabi. Two other works in her collection of lighthearted vampire novels for teenage readers have been nominated for Gradam Reics Carlo - the Award Irish language Books for younger readers. She received a prize for the third book in the series at Oireachtas na Gaeilge in 2015 while the final instalment of this humourous series is due for publication in 2016.
Orna also has a keen interest in Gaelic music. She has won stage prizes at the Oireachtas, Feis Mhaitiú, Feis Cheoil and was awarded the Máirtín Ó Diomsaigh winners’ distinction. She enjoys the storytelling quality of song. It was this that inspired her to start writing.
Towards the end of February, Orna Ní Choileáin will come to Leeuwarden for a few days stay in order to get a first impression of the city of Ljouwert/Leeuwarden and to discuss the opportunities to participate in literary and cultural events in Friesland during her eight weeks stay.
The Focail Eile (Other Words) programme aims to establish a network of creative stays for European writers in small and minority languages through a network of partners from several European countries. The partner organisations of the Other Words initiative, promoted by Donostia San Sebastian 2016 and Donostia Kultura, are the following: Donostia Kultura and DSS2016 (Basque Country), Foras na Gaeilge (Ireland), XOP-eXhange of art operators and producers (Slovenia), Youth Forum naMladi (Macedonia) and Ljouwert/Leeuwarden (Friesland, the Netherlands), European Cultural Capital in 2018.
Focail Eile (Other Words) will be carried out between 2016 and 2019.
