Kristina Kočan (1981) is a poet and translator. In 2016 she received her Ph.D. in contemporary American Poetry at the University of Maribor. Her poetry publications include three books, the latest published in 2018 with the title šivje (Maribor: Litera), 2014 Kolesa in Murve (Ptuj: Zavod Itadakimasu) and 2008 Šara, which was nominated for the best Debut Book Award. Her poetry has been translated into English, Hungarian, Czech, Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian.
In 2009 the translation of selected poems by Audre Lorde, entitled Postaje (Ljubljana: ŠKUC) was published. In 2006 she co-translated the anthology of African American poetry, entitled Govoreči boben (Murska Sobota: Separatio). Her poetry, translations and articles are regularly published in literary magazines in Slovenia and abroad.
In 2015 she began working intensively with musicians, writing lyrics for a Slovenian band, Brest, and dedicating herself to the project, in which she combines her poetry with drums together with the Slovenian drummer Denis Jančič. Occasionally she works as an editor and leads poetry workshops.
Currently she is working on her first collection of short stories that is about to come out in 2019. She lives in Maribor.
